Why this is harder than it looks.

Latency is the whole illusion.

People forgive an unusual voice. They do not forgive a pause. A half-second of dead air before every reply is what makes a caller start speaking slowly and loudly, and no amount of scripting recovers from it. Production voice work is mostly a latency engineering problem wearing a conversation-design costume.

Interruption is normal speech.

Real callers cut in, change their mind mid-sentence, and answer the question you were about to ask. An agent that has to finish its turn before it can listen is not having a conversation, it is reading. Handling barge-in gracefully is the difference between a phone system and a phone call.

A call that ends in a task is a call that worked.

Voice is only worth deploying if the agent can do the thing being asked for — book the appointment, verify the detail, update the record — inside your systems, during the call, within the same scoped permissions as any other agent. Otherwise you have built a very expensive way to take a message.
